People, Places & Patterns

The Story Behind the Hughes Studio Toile

As a textile designer, I translate stories into patterns. Those stories may belong to an individual, a family, a couple, a brand, or an institution. I illustrate the people, places, traditions, products, and identifying details that make each world feel unmistakably its own.

When I began creating a toile for Hughes Studio itself, I approached the studio as I would any commission. I considered not only how the brand should look, but also what it values, how it works, and how I want people to feel when they encounter it.

Bespoke Commissions

Your story, translated into pattern.

Hughes Studio creates custom toile and narrative patterns inspired by the people, places, memories, and details that make a story distinctly your own. From family histories and weddings to hospitality, institutions, and brand collaborations, each commission is thoughtfully illustrated and composed into a timeless pattern designed to be lived with, shared, and remembered.

About Hughes Studio

Lauren Hughes is the Creative Director of Hughes Studio, an illustration and textile design studio devoted to telling stories through pattern. Inspired by the tradition of Toile de Jouy, Hughes Studio transforms people, places, memories, and meaningful details into intricate narrative patterns—creating something that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

Raised in Charleston and now based in Los Angeles, Lauren’s work is shaped by an appreciation for history, craftsmanship, and a strong sense of place. Drawing from the visual language of antique engravings and traditional decorative arts, she reinterprets these influences through a contemporary lens, creating patterns that honor the past while feeling distinctly of the present.

People, Places & Patterns are at the heart of Hughes Studio—whether capturing a family history, celebrating a beloved place, telling the story of an institution, or creating an original collection inspired by the world around us.
