Custom Toile Commissions

Hughes Studio creates bespoke toile de Jouy patterns inspired by meaningful people, places, memories and traditions.
Each pattern is illustrated in the Hughes Studio style: crisp black linework, elegant silhouettes, open white space and carefully composed scenes that feel personal and timeless.
Custom commissions are available for families, interiors, hospitality brands, apparel, events, stationery and other creative projects.
Commission packages start at $3,000
The standard commission includes:
8–12 custom illustrated scenes
A seamless repeating pattern
Four colorway options
Two rounds of revisions at each major stage
Layered PSD, transparent PNG and JPEG files
High-resolution digital delivery
Commercial licensing, expanded usage, additional colorways and larger project scopes may require an additional fee.
How it works
1. Submit the contact form
Tell us about your project, intended use, desired timeline and any meaningful people, places or details you would like to include. Reference images and visual inspiration are welcome.
If the project is a good fit, Hughes Studio will follow up by email to discuss your ideas and provide an estimated scope and quote.
2. Reserve your place
Once the project is approved, a 50% deposit reserves your place on the Hughes Studio schedule.
After the deposit is received, we’ll schedule a discovery call to discuss the project in detail and confirm the creative direction.
3. Develop and refine the artwork
Hughes Studio develops the concept, scene list and initial illustrations for review.
Together, we refine the compositions, likenesses, details and overall mood before the artwork is arranged into a seamless repeating pattern.
4. Receive your finished files
Your final pattern and colorways are delivered digitally in an organized shared folder.
Typical timeline: 3–4 weeks from the start of the project. The remaining 50% balance is due before final file delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know exactly which scenes I want?
No. You may arrive with a detailed list or simply the beginning of an idea. I will help identify the strongest scenes and determine how they can work together.
Can you work from old or imperfect photographs?
Yes. Family snapshots, archival photographs, real-estate images, phone pictures, and other visual references can all be useful. When a subject is not fully documented, I can often combine multiple references to create an appropriate interpretation.
Can people, pets, or brand elements be included?
Yes. A toile may incorporate people, animals, logos, monograms, architecture, products, colors, mascots, and other meaningful visual details. These elements can be depicted recognizably or interpreted more generally, depending on the scale and purpose of the pattern.
Are revisions included?
Two rounds of revisions are included at each principal creative stage unless otherwise stated in the proposal. Additional revisions or requests beyond the approved scope will be quoted separately before further work begins.
What does my license allow?
Your commission includes a license for the applications defined in your agreement. Hughes Studio retains the copyright and authorship of the artwork unless a separate written copyright transfer is negotiated.
Personal-use licenses do not include product resale, business promotion, or other commercial applications. Commercial and expanded usage rights can be incorporated into the project agreement for an additional fee.
Do you arrange printing or manufacturing?
Hughes Studio provides the custom artwork and production-ready pattern files but does not manufacture or install finished products. You may work with your preferred production partner, or the files can be prepared for an agreed vendor or application as part of the project scope.
