Behind the Pattern: A Kentucky Toile
I was drawn to the way Kentucky holds elegance and ruggedness together—polished traditions, open landscapes, and a strong sense of place.
Kentucky has a visual language all its own: rolling pastures, weathered stone walls, elegant horse farms and traditions shaped over generations. For this toile, I wanted to capture that heritage through the atmosphere of a refined Southern country estate—warm, grounded and quietly luxurious.
The finished pattern brings together Kentucky’s sporting culture, natural landscape and musical traditions in a palette of deep hunter green, warm brown and aged ivory.
Horse Country
Horses form the heart of the story. The pattern includes thoroughbreds at pasture, a rider along a country fence line and the recognizable twin spires of Churchill Downs. I balanced these larger scenes with quieter details—bridles, barns and open fields—to create the feeling of life unfolding across a working Kentucky estate.
Bluegrass on the Lawn
I also wanted the pattern to reflect Kentucky beyond the racetrack. A fiddle-and-banjo duet introduces a more intimate cultural note, inspired by the tradition of musicians gathering informally to play together.
In the storyboard, the illustration comes to life against misty paddocks and a distant brick stable. The musicians share the landscape with a lone horse, connecting Kentucky’s music and equestrian heritage within one scene.
A Richer Sporting Palette
The mood surrounding the pattern became just as important as the individual illustrations. Walnut, cognac leather, antique brass and deep green tartan give the collection the feeling of a well-loved library, tack room or country house.
Seeing the toile applied to wallpaper, upholstery, a silk scarf and a travel journal helped reveal its versatility. It can feel traditional and collected at a larger scale, or delicate and personal when used on a smaller accessory.
The Finished Story
This pattern is my interpretation of Kentucky: horses moving through the morning mist, bluegrass music carrying across an open lawn and the quiet rituals of country life. Together, the scenes create a toile rooted in place, heritage and the beauty of things made to last.
