The Game Day Pattern: A Story About College Football

I grew up in South Carolina with wonderful memories of attending football games at the University of South Carolina and Clemson. I’ve never been a huge sports fan, but I’ve always loved a college game day. In the fall, when the air turns crisp, the excitement seems to build long before kickoff.

Some of my favorite memories begin at the tailgate. Friends gather, coolers open, and everyone settles into the rituals of the day. Then there’s the energy in the stands, the cheerleaders on the sidelines, and the marching band taking the field. I’ve always enjoyed those moments just as much as the game itself.

I created this college football toile to capture the whole experience. The illustrations move from a pregame tailgate and cheering spectators to the action on the field, the halftime band, and a handshake after the final play. A campus arch, footballs, pennants, and a little beer cooler fill in the smaller moments. Together, they tell a story that feels familiar even if you can’t recall the final score.

I kept the drawings open and detailed enough to discover up close, with warm brown linework on an ivory ground. The result has a vintage collegiate feeling that still feels at home on something you might carry or wear today. The full pattern comes to life across a tablecloth, scarf, and dress, while individual scenes have room to shine on pieces like a tote bag or notebook.

For me, college football has always been about more than the game. It’s the people you meet before kickoff, the sound of the band, the crowd rising together, and the quieter walk home afterward. This pattern is a celebration of all of it.
