Behind the Pattern: A Charlottesville Toile
I created this Charlottesville toile while looking forward to an autumn visit with my mother and sister. Before arriving, I wanted to become familiar with the places we would see and capture the particular character of the area: historic, welcoming, and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Virginia landscape.
The finished pattern brings together university traditions, vineyard views, intimate dining scenes, and small seasonal details. It became both an illustrated portrait of Charlottesville and a visual itinerary for our weekend.
A Few Favorite Details
The University of Virginia Lawn
The Lawn and Rotunda bring a sense of history and structure to the pattern. Their classical architecture creates a strong focal point while immediately establishing the design’s connection to Charlottesville.
Lunch in Virginia Wine Country
A table overlooking the rolling hills captures the gracious, leisurely atmosphere of the surrounding vineyards. I especially loved illustrating the balance between the refined dining setting and the open countryside beyond it.
A Cozy Evening in Charlottesville
A fireside dinner and intimate tavern scene represent the warmer, more atmospheric side of the city. These smaller moments help the pattern feel lived in—as though it holds memories from an entire weekend rather than simply depicting a collection of landmarks.
Changing leaves, pinecones, and stacks of books complete the story, adding touches of autumn and academic life between the larger scenes.
Together, the illustrations create a layered portrait of Charlottesville: historic yet lively, elegant without feeling formal, and especially beautiful in the fall. I wanted the finished toile to feel like a collection of moments gathered during a memorable autumn weekend.
